A Short Tribute to the Legendary Doc Fowlkes
A fond memory of my dad walking my youngest son around the ballpark in 2012.
Five years ago, my then 2 year old son got to enjoy an adventure with my dad. While his older brother was playing, Grandpa took him by the hand and walked him all around the park. 84 years older than my little boy, I'm sure this was the moment he taught him what he taught me and my three older brothers. Baseball is meant to be fun. It's a child's game played by boys of all ages.
At my father's memorial service two years ago, I had more people come to me and tell me that playing for Coach Doc was one of the fondest memories of their life. I learned so much from my dad. Before he died, he wrote this down for me to remember. The three basic rules of baseball:
1. Be on time
2. Be dressed and have equipment
3. Give 100%
When you do these things as a player or athlete, you show respect to the game and you honor the uniform. That's important, because what you are representing is a lot more than just yourself.
If you had a dad like mine, you were blessed. He is the reason I am so passionate about making the game fun for everyone that plays for me.
